Ever since Jennifer Lopez appeared in the lead role in Out Of Sight (about a year after starring in Selena), I became a favorite fan of hers. Not only is she a successful singer (one of my faves as well), but she clearly shows she has talent in the acting arena too.
An Unfinished Life does take on the hints of the usual family drama, but with such a list of great actors, it manages to do quite well. Due to the movie length of only 108 minutes, seasoned drama viewers will know there will be areas of tension between the characters which must be paced more quickly than a typical 140 minute movie. Of course, if An Unfinished Life were that long, it wouldn't have made it to your local rental outlet.
We find Jean Gilkyson (Jennifer Lopez) looking for a way to leave her abusive boyfriend, and the only option is to take her daughter (Becca Gardner) to her grandfather's (Robert Redford) ranch out in Wyoming (the movie is actually filmed in British Columbia, Canada). Einar Gilkyson isn't too happy to see anyone, especially since his son is dead, due to a past event which left his son dead, and Jean alive. The only person he's open to is Mitch Bradley (Morgan Freeman), who are longtime friends, and who was currently bed-ridden by a tempermental bear (played by Bart The Bear), roaming the area.
Robert Redford and Morgan Freeman are a good match in this movie. Of course, could you really expect these two to NOT blend well into a movie so nicely if they were not such great actors. Probably not.
One of the features of the movie which really gave me a "good feeling" was the cinematics. Great cinematography, and reminded me of The Horse Whisperer or Brokeback Mountain. The director didn't have to convey the scenic shots, and could have merely relied on indirect scenic shots as the characters move throughout the countryside, but I could tell there were scenes which were purposefully created to give An Unfinished Life a wholistic substance. If you own a widescreen television, you scream for cinematography like this. Wide open landscapes and lush greenery are a gem in movies like these.
