The Exorcism Of Emily Rose is about a local priest (Tom Wilkinson) who is charged with negligent homicide of a young woman (Jennifer Carpenter) who was apparently afflicted with demon possession. Emily Rose belongs to a rural religious family who are deeply troubled (to say the least) when Emily demonstrates abnormal behaviors and voices. When Emily goes to college in her first year, she gets tragically worse.
The story is loosely based on the real events of the life of Anneliese Michel, a young woman from Miltenberg, Germany who claimed she was possessed by demons--six of them, to be exact. From the age of 16 till her eventual death at only 23-years old, Anneliese continued to believe she was under seige by supernatural evils. The Catholic Church originally authorized the exorcism (as the Emily Rose movie takes great liberty at saying) but reversed their decision later on and said her problems were due to earthly causes, such as mental illness. Anneliese's mental state is still in debate because she was taken several anti-psychotic drugs, which could have escalated her condition and may have actually caused her premature death.
Laura Linney plays the emotionally-restrained lawyer who begins to experience her own form of abnormal events when she takes on the case, and is warned by Father Moore she will place herself in the path of rather ungood things if she continues on the path of attempting to find out just what happened.
The Exorcism Of Emily Rose is an interesting movie, but unfortunately deviates terribly from the real events. However, I think the movie does a pretty good job at delivering the possibility of supernatural forces at work on specifically chosen individuals. Why they are chosen, is anyone's guess. If you enjoyed The Exorcist series, this movie will be toned down as it has more to do with the courtroom drama of proving if Emily was possessed, if there was negligence involved in her death, and whether she was mentally unstable. The movie still has a good collection of scary scenes, though, which actually scared me more than The Exorcist due to the simple fact of having a courtroom scene (which is rather boring) then cut to a demonically possessed woman.
About The DVD
The Exorcism Of Emily Rose DVD had good video quality as well as audio, and I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary.
