eXaNetworks Inc. today announced the launch of a low-cost, low-bandwidth digital photo sharing technology that will enable photofinishing labs to retain and capture market share in the booming digital photography market. eXaNetworks is exhibiting the solution at the Photo Marketing Association International (PMA) Annual Convention and Trade Show in Las Vegas through Sunday.
"Our turnkey solution offers traditional photofinishing labs a hedge against the rapid adoption of digital camera technology by consumers," said Patrick Serex, president and CEO of eXaNetworks. "And because of the viral nature of photo sharing, our solution will enable labs to not only retain their existing customers but attract new ones as well."
eXaNetworks will charge photofinishing labs a modest, one-time installation fee and low monthly licensing fee for the photo sharing service.
Digital photographers can use the eXaNetworks application to quickly and easily organize, share, and control access to their content. End users require no special software and can view photos through a simple Web interface on any standard browser at no charge.
eXaNetworks' proprietary photo sharing technology is available for both Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh platforms. A Linux version of the application is in development.
"eXaNetworks' peer-to-peer architecture offers the promise of saving orders of magnitude in bandwidth and storage costs without compromising quality," said Alexis Gerard, president Future Image, and executive editor and publisher of The Future Image Report. "It makes it possible to scale up seamlessly, with lower operational costs, greater control and convenience for picture takers and sharers, and more opportunity for service providers. We expect this architecture to be adopted not just for photofinishing, but for other innovative digital imaging services that are yet to emerge."
