Canon has released an upgrade model to their 1DMKII. The 1DMKIIn now has a few new features and hardware changes professionals have been requesting. Let's take an overview of what they are...
New 2.5" LCD Monitor
Why Canon didn't originally come out with a 2.5" LCD monitor for the 1DMKII is beyond my reasoning capabilities. It certainly wasn't like this size of LCD was something new. Nikon's D2h had this size way before the 1DMKII came along. Still, I'm happy to see the 1DMKIIn has it. Canon listened and it came about. I suppose Canon didn't think a 2.5" LCD was that necessary until professionals started complaining.
Separate RAW and JPEG destinations
A very nice feature requested, is now supported. RAW files can now be written to the CF card slot, and the JPEG files can be written to the SD card slot.
Picture Styles
I can't help but thinking this is a sign of things to come. Professional DSLRs now having lingo compaired to that of a Point & Shoot. It would be nice if people who put down $4,000 on a DSLR would know a little something about photography. Well, the industry is proving otherwise. More money = Less experience. Here are the following options from the 1DMKIIn:
- Standard
- Portrait
- Landscape
- Neutral
- Faithful
- Monochrome
- User Defined 1-3
Picture Styles replace the Processing Parameters and Color Matrix options of Canon's DSLRs. Thank goodness photographers still have 3 User-Defined settings. Hopefully more info will become available soon on this new idea. I'd also hope Canon will enable a feature, if they already have not, of the Picture Style modes themselves, where you can customize each mode for your own liking--such as what you tend to shoot as a Portrait or a Landscape shot, etc. I kind of doubt it, but we'll see.
