Jesse Stone is a former L.A. homicide detective who, for reasons we will eventually find out, has an interesting time getting used to a small New England town in Stone Cold. This is the first movie taken from Robert B. Parker's novels, and John Fasano has adapted the novel to the television screen. Paradise, MA, is where Jesse Stone starts his new job as Chief Of Police, and although this is a small town, a series of murders requires Jesse to use his skills from his previous job in an urgent need to stop the killings.
For a small town you'd think Jesse would have a lot of time on his hands, but taking a closer look, we find there are many problems for Jesse to solve. Of course, Jesse has carried with him from his L.A. homicide days, his own issues with drinking. Jesse also realizes being Chief Of Police in Paradise is his last chance at keeping his drinking separate from his career. Knowing this and doing it are two totally separate realities, and Jesse will have to figure out what his priorities are.
Stone Cold begins with Jesse's deputy, Luther "Suitcase" Simpson (Kohl Sudduth), who decides to take a leak out by the shoreline. While doing so, he observes a dog looking at something behind some rocks. Jesse gets the call and is on his way out to the crime scene.
Simultaneously, another case is brewing with a teenager who was gang raped, but is reluctant to identify the boys who did it, for being threatened by one of the rapists. It's up to Jesse to convince Candace (Alexis Dziena) she needs to offer more help as the taunting by the boys will only continue if she does not stand up to them.
